Dr Amrita Ramanathan

Hi I'm Dr. Amrita Ramanathan.

How are you?

Reaching out to a therapist can feel like a big step, and it’s understandable to take time finding someone who feels right for you.

Reading about a therapist can be helpful, but often it’s the conversation itself that gives you the clearest sense of fit.

Many people find it useful to speak with more than one therapist before deciding.

You’re very welcome to get in touch to arrange a complimentary 30-minute consultation, so we can explore together whether working with me feels like a good fit.

About Me

I am a licensed Clinical Psychologist working across NHS services and in private practice for 7 years. I work with adults with a wide range of problems such as trauma, low mood, stress, persistant anxiety, low self-esteem, burnout, and experiences of persistant numbness. I often work with people who are struggling with current difficulties in the context of early childhood trauma and life adversities.

Therapy with me is paced carefully and collaboratively. I aim to create a space that feels emotionally safe, respectful, and non-judgemental — where we can gently make sense of what you are going through and work towards meaningful change and helpful ways to cope with problems.

It’s common to feel unsure about what’s wrong or what kind of help might be most useful. Therapy can be a space to gently make sense of this together. If you’re wondering whether I have the right skills to support you, you’re welcome to ask — and if I’m not the right fit, I’ll support you in finding someone who is.

Therapeutic Methods

I work integratively, drawing on evidence-based therapies and adapting them to your unique needs, goals, and values. Approaches I commonly use include:

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
  • Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR)
  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
  • Dialectic Behavioural Therapy (DBT)
  • Schema-Informed Therapy
  • Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT)

Alongside individual experiences, I also consider relational, cultural, and systemic influences that may be contributing to your difficulties.

A Trauma-Informed & Culturally Sensitive Approach

My work is grounded in trauma-informed principles. This means prioritising emotional safety, choice, collaboration, and trust. We move at a pace that feels manageable for you, and you remain in control of what we explore and when. Having grown up in Indonesia, Singapore, the United States, and the UK, I am deeply aware of how culture, identity, and social context shape our experiences of distress and healing. I strive to create a therapeutic space that honours the multiple identities you hold.

I regularly work with individuals from minoritised and underserved communities, including LGBTQ+ individuals and neurodivergent people. I approach this work with humility, openness, and a commitment to ongoing learning.

FAQs

How do I get started?

The first step is to book a complimentary 30-minute call. This offers space to briefly talk about what you’re hoping for support with and to ask any questions you have.

We can then consider together whether my experience is a good fit for your needs. If we decide to move forward, we can arrange an assessment appointment. If not, I will help you explore alternative sources of support.

What is a clinical psychologist?

A clinical psychologist is a mental health professional trained to help people make sense of emotional distress and develop ways of coping that feel meaningful and sustainable. Training involves many years of study, research, and clinical practice.

This allows therapy to be offered in a way that is informed by evidence, grounded in compassion, and responsive to the wider contexts of your life.

When and where will we meet?

I offer online sessions via Google Meet. We would usually arrange a weekly time to meet once a week. This can always be tailored to your needs and schedule.

What happens in my assessment?

The assessment session is 50 minutes long. This is a space to begin understanding what you have been experiencing and what you would like support with, at a pace that feels manageable for you.

Together, we will consider what might be most helpful moving forward. If we decide to continue, we will agree a flexible, initial plan for therapy, with regular opportunities to review and adjust our focus as needed.

How much does it cost?

Sessions last 50 minutes and cost £130. Payment is made by bank transfer or cash prior to the session.

I offer a limited number of sliding scale spaces, and you’re very welcome to ask about this during our initial conversation.

If you are considering using health insurance to fund sessions, please feel free to get in touch and I can let you know whether I am registered with your provider.

How many sessions will I need?

Therapy can be adapted to suit your needs, preferences, and circumstances. Some people find that a small number of sessions is enough to help them make sense of what’s going on and think about next steps, while others choose to work together over a longer period of time. We can talk this through and review it together as we go.
